You are welcome to stay at my house

where the best food is (my staple question, since I am 100 percent a foodie) and also the best part of town to stay in. Anyone who is uncomfortable answering on the thread is welcome to pm or email me :)
Happy Hobbying Atlanta!

It's been awhile since I lived in Atlanta, but Blue Pointe in Buckhead used to have an absolutely amazing selection of cold water oysters. For steaks (and a nice bottle of wine), Chops was one of my favorites.

seafood yes! Lobster, clams...anything from the sea

both have fine hotels and many good dining & watering holes.
Worth a trip for fine dining is Kevin Rathbun's Steak....www.kevinrathbunsteak.com
Rathbun's.....www.rathbunsrestaurant.com
Agave.......www.agaverestaurant.com
Wisteria......www.wisteria-atlanta.com........exceptional, great bar, easy to strike up conversation, and the southern twist on the menu are fantastic(the beef tenderloin with the mac & cheese is outrageous)
There are many more fine places...PM if interested
Welcome South Ya'll

For southern food, I suggest Horseradish Grill. Restaurant right in the middle of an upscale residential area. Shrimp and Grits are to die for.

not too many NYers know this but I have a weakness for southern food as well. I was born down south and although when I speak I am all NY, theres that part that craves the cooking only the south can accomplish

for years the top rated restaurant in Atlanta has been Bachanalia and for seafood you might try Kyma - it is a sister restaurant to Blue Point recommended above but it focuses on Greek/Mediterranean styles as opposed to the more continental style of Blue Point.

I had no idea atlanta was such a food town. It blows DC away so far as far as sheer choices

Food first:

I live in Buckhead and eat out almost every night but not in Bickhead.  On the whole there is a difference between Bickhead and Midtown restaurants.  Buckhead is dominated by the larger corporate style restaurants and most of them are steakhouses (including Hal's, a locally owned Buckhead bueblood favorite). Midtown has mostly chef-driven restaurants with more interesting cuisines.  My preference keeps me away from larger restaurants, which is also typically the Buckhead restaurant since this is where most most of the tourists and conventioneers go.  So I go to Midtown the vast majority of the times I go out.  The exception to Buckhead is Local 3 (my current favorite and is more like a Midtown restaurant) but it isn't near the central Buckhead.

Midtown has 3 areas: Virginia-Highland which is the name of a neighborhood and an intersection where this area first became a entertainment/dining area and is on the east side.  An area in the center of Midtown, which is along Peachtree St. (yes, there are 56 streets named Peachtree here) and Westside which is primarily along Howell Mill Road at 14th Street.

I don't know what type of food or atmosphere you like so I can't make any recommendations but you are welcome to PM me withndetails and I will send you names and descriptions.

Where to stay:

You need to be centrally located with ease of access.  Most people say they find Midtown difficult to navigate so I suggest you stay in Buckhead.  Either way, Atlanta is a car town so you need to rent a car and definitely bring a GPS device if you don't have one on your phone.  Remember Atlanta is not NY, the cabs are roaming.  You will have to call a cab whenever you need one. The larger hotels will typically have a couple lined up waiting but once out, you will need to call, probably Buckhead Cab Co.  It is the one I have used when I've had too much to drink or need to get to the airport.

Again, you're welcome to PM me if you have more questions.

I agree, Local 3 is a new favorite of mine. But good luck finding it!
Holman and Finch is another favorite. http://holeman-finch.com/
Atlanta is becomming quite the foodie town.

For for ladies touring, it may be rough finding the right combination of safe location, easy access and great food. While still having time to get our and enjoy the options.

If you do end up in buckhead or North Perimeter, you can also try a new place,
Double Zero Napoletana, on Roswell Rd right at I-285. It's new and very promising.

Cara, how much spare time are you going to set aside for Restaurant exploring have while in town?

normally not as much as I pan to do here LOL

wonderful info ziggy thanks!

I'm partial to Buckhead.  Good restaurants in Buckhead.  I'd disagree that Midtown has better "chef run" restaurants than Buckhead.   There are tons if chef run spots in Buckhead.
Restaurants I'd hit rec to you (let me know your tastes and I can recommend more)

Aria - best restaurant in Buckhead
Pricci - good Italian
Hal's - good hangout spot.  I like the gumbo there. Good looking wait staff.  I swear they purposely rub their tits on my back at the bar.
Tavern at Phipps - near all of the hotels.  Stick with bar type food and basics.  Upscale 30-40 pickup joint.
Fillenis/LaFonda - good quick pizza/or tacos.

I personally think Bluepointe has seen better days.

Kyma is good but $$$$.  I do like the apps at the bar.

Bistro Niko has a good vibe/looks great.  The food is good but I'd personally go to Anis for French food. Nice patio at Anis.  If you are solo I'd hit up B Niko.

French food is great, but I would want to try something else since there are so many great french places in nyc...this thread has been a wealth of info thanks

Understand that.  Than don't do Italian either.  Go to JCT Kitchen.  It's on the westside, near Buckhead.  Good shrimp and grits.  I love the deviled eggs there.  They do the "farm to table" better than anyone in ATL in my opinion.

Also go by Canoe and get the salmon, potato cakes, and goat cheese app. It's in Vinings, not far from Buckhead.

Those are two good restaurants you wont find in NYC.

I have never ever heard of shrimp and grits LOL...eggs and grit yes, but what does shrimp and grits taste like?

It's a classic southern coastal dish (think Charleston, SC).  Think Cheesy grits with crumbled bacon, garlic and big plump shrimp.  A classic dinner dish.  If you have never had it, like shrimp and are coming to Atlanta - there is no excuse for you not to get it.

West End (yes near ATL waste water treatment facility) is just amazing, not only JCT check out Star Provisions for a casual amazing lunch , shrimp poo boys are amazing, try Taqueria del sol for Mexican and margaritas, Bacchanalia for upscale dinner (don't miss it with that dinner date), West Egg for on of the beast and unique breakfasts in the area, and if you are a fan of food network try flip for unique burgers and drinks (remember richard blais).  Atlanta is now competing with NYC and that is saying something coming from a guy who lived there to.

Where to stay, probably Buckhead but rent a car and get to west end and eat, eat, eat :)
