I have heard from many POT's that they can often get inundated by "pic hunters."  These are men who just want to get access to private or other pics, presumably to feed their own "spank bank" or just to feel they are getting one over on a POT (maybe as some form of "revenge" for past scammers?).  

 
So I'm not surprised to hear a POT bailed when asked for a private pic early in the process.  

 
If you already you know she is attractive to you (i.e.: "a smokeshow"), perhaps you could have waited to ask for more pics until after you had that phone conversation.  If she's legit (hint: scammers are rarely interested in wasting time on phone calls, as it greatly increases the risk they will be exposed), and is specifically interested in you, you may have inadvertently scared her away by looking like yet another pic hunter.  

 
For me, I almost never ask for access to private pics, or for additional pics.  If I can see she's hot from her public pics, I don't need a bikini or lingerie pic to decide if I want to move forward. Yes, some POT's will send me more pics on their own initiative, and I always appreciate that. But if I can get to a M&G (or at least a vid chat), I will get all the physical data I need from direct observation.

I got to text with a POT the other day and she started going on about how she loves anal and oral and role playing  
We spoke about meeting in the next few days and then she asked if I wanted to see ‘hot pics and videos’
She didn’t say but I got the feeling she was selling pics and didn’t really want to meet, but put on a charade.
I told her I was working and couldn’t enjoy the pics but looked forward to meeting her. We’ll see

It's probably pertinent to add that she had granted me access to her private photos, before she sent her first message.  And, I didn't ask for anything that could be considered 'sexy' or compromising.  Just a selfie of her holding up a specific number of fingers.  I was looking to ensure that it was not some scam profile, using stolen Insta photos.

 
And, the fact that she demonstrated no interest in messaging with me out of the site, even before I'd proposed the private photo, also made me a little suspicious.
