$11,000/year, and only abut 50-75% effective.

My concern is that a person taking it would have a false sense of security and might therefore do riskier things, thus obviating any positive effect in terms of reducing HIV.

In another 10 yrs or so, we will have access to drugs that are lot cheaper...

I think clients' having a false sense of security with regards to doing riskier sexual activities will always be an increased threat, regardless of taking a pill like this or not.

There are people in committed long-term relationships with HIV positive partners.

For them, this could be another line of defense in addition to condoms. For me, it kind of falls into the same category as that drug that is intended to stop people from spreading HPV between outbreaks that you see advertised on the TV.

First, the drug is only geared to the affluent. Not many people can afford to spend 11,000 a year, that is some people's annual income. Second, the pill is not realistic as it relates to the real world. That is, a person needs to take the pill "everyday", and not miss one day. That is not an effective way of preventing HIV, many people will forget and skip a day. Maybe when they make advancements, you can get a one time injection or something that doesn't require daily use. Also, most wills will have side effects, and things that you cannot do. They didn't mention that a person cannot drink alcohol or anything like that. Finally, the pill is only effective with one type of STD, and not all. Unprotected sex can result in many forms of STD, and not just HIV. Every pill for every STD I suppose, it's too much to remember, too expensive, and not realistic IMO.

They should donate their efforts to help Africa out, because I don't think there is a high demand for it here in the US. So, I am glad they finally released it to the public, but, it still has a long way to be an effective pill IMO.
