Thanks. I always check mine with iodine because those bill markers won't detect it if they use beeswax.

you told us what city this took place in and what city the guy was from.

What about the appearance of the fake bills he gave you is a giveaway? Is it the feel of the bills, the printing, or are any of the security features missing? Do the bills look like the new ones or like the old ones?

This type of information could help us know what to keep an eye out for when we get 50's.  Thanks.

There are three security features the public can use to check the authenticity of their notes:

1 Hold the bill up to the light and look for the watermark, or faint image, similar to the large portrait of President Grant on the $50 note and President Jackson on the $20 note; it is part of the paper itself and can be seen from both sides of the note.

2 Look at the numeral “50” on the $50 note and “20” on the $20 note in the lower right hand corner on the face of the bill. The color-shifting ink changes from copper to green when you tilt the note up and down.

3 Hold the bill up to the light and look for the security thread running vertically through the note. If you look closely, you can see the words “USA TWENTY” printed on the $20 note thread and “USA 50” printed on the $50 note thread.

Conterfeit money often feels different. If I don't like the way a bill feels I rub it on a piece of paper. If the ink rubs off, it should be real. Alyssa

Or accept Gold coins from now on.  Depending on the face value could be worth from 40 to 400+ now.  These can be 'replicated', but just take a real gold coin, weigh it, and compare with one you get and the difference is obvious.

Gold can now be owned by individuals since Ronald Reagan revoked a law barring every day citizens from even keeping gold coins / bars.

My wife tried to cash one at the grocery store and was turn down..Still trying to figure that out.

LOL, well coins can't be 'cashed' per se at any local bank, I've tried to cash a Gold eagle at BofA, and was turned down.  Was told to take it to a 'jewelry / coin' dealer.

That doesn't happen often. Lol. The posts on this subject were excellent, but your last one begs this question artistalexander.

What makes you think that your client had any idea he was passing you a bogus $50.00? It seems reasonable to assume, that if he did, he would have ripped you off for the whole donation. Why only scam you for a small portion of it?

That's what makes conterfeiting such an insidious crime. The individuals who use the bogus script are usually inocent of any wrong doing. Just a thought.

Oh, and by the way, an interesting bit of trivia. A full 100% of criminals who conterfeit money, (not pass it) get caught!

You can try quickly checking the bills in the bathroom before the client leaves. It's awkward but it helps. If you have any of the bills left, try getting a feel for them. They really do feel different. If they are good conterfeits it maybe hard to avoid getting stuck with them. It's not something that happens often so I wouldnt worry about it. You may try asking your clients for alot of info up front. Chances are someone wont do something like this when you have their personal info. However, there is a chance he may not have known, but I doubt it. Working girls are easy targets for fake money. But it doesnt happen too often.

Many ladies ask that the donation be left in the bathroom.  That allows for counting, checking for fakes, etc. in private.  I know that I'd be a bit offended if I watched the lady take out a test kit for my donation.  It sorta says, "I don't trust you; now let's have sex".  I like the illusion to be a little convincing.
