I'll take a stab at it.  Age: mid 30's to mid 40's.  Preferably divorced, no current SO. I've done my fair share of reading about the origins of this term.  Needless to say there are many claims and arguments surrounding this but most renditions carry a common theme.

The term was coined by horny 15 - 18 year old teenage boys.  In their ealry adolescent years most young guys find it incomprehensible to think of their parents as active sexual beings and in the vast majority of cases they almost never view their own mom or their friends moms as being sexy.  However one day it just happens. Perhaps it is at a school function, an athletic event or a supermarket.  So and so's mom is with him/her and she is hot and induces all sorts of wood and fantasy.  The whispers start with other friends, 'did you ever see so and so's mom?  She's totally hot!.  Well before long MILF is coined and every young, horny guy can instantly relate when he eventually hears the term.

As the term gained popularity, debate would often crop up over its literal meaning and proper use.  Some literalists will say that a hot 35 or so lady that has never given birth cannot be described as a MILF. Others will point out that there are many young mothers who do not fit the MILF bill.  For example a smoking hot young 19-year old who has had a child at this young age does not fit the MILF perception for many.  And so as bellad's  very question pinpoints, MILF represents a personna of sorts that means different things to different people.  Some think about the soccer mom image while others think of women in the 30 to 40+ age bracket.  High school and college guys will use it to categorize what they perceive to be hot 'older women' and clearly they do not know (or care) if she is actually someone's mom.        

I kind of laugh at arguments about this subject.  There was a thread on the Porn board a few months ago and some guys got pissed if others did not see as they did. In any case, for me I relate to the conceptual image that the term was meant to describe.  At 53, MILFs are younger women to me but there is still an image that comes to mind. Even though the term was not used by me and my buds when we were young, I can relate to the concept.  I vividly recall the first time I viewed someone's mom as being someone that I thought was hot.  Like many categorizing terms, I find it easier to know when I see it then to describe it.  'Girl Next Door', 'College Coed', 'Country Girl', 'Stripper Type', 'Business Woman', 'Cover Girl', 'MILF', etc. are all examples of terms that conjour up a particular image of a woman.    And in my mind the images for each and every one of these terms is different but all good.

Last note:

After the Soprano's finale last week I watched the debut of 'John from Cincinnati'.  Rebecca DeMornay plays the grandmother of a young and upcoming teen surfer phenom.  Rebecca remains very attractive in my books and this leads to the fact that yes indeed there are many using the 'GMILF' term...you got it 'Grandma's I'd Like To F...'

At least I think that was the start for my generation.

Its stayed with me for all this time..that older woman thing. I can remember when it was the senior cheerleaders, female teachers ect. moved on to the college gals and now MILF. Hell now I even enjoy the "older" porno stuff sometimes when the gals sport their silvery grey streaks.

The only requirement seems to be that they are "sexy" whatever that means. I have been attracted to almost any body type or personality at any given time and have felt pride in the fact I seem to find something positive in them all.

One great thing about getting older is I can still live this fantasy thats been such a friend for all this time, and I have added the variety of those sweet ripe young things to my menu.

For me, it's a woman about my age (mid-40s) to maybe the mid-30s.  They would be attractive, in a girl-next door look, but just a bit older.

I was a soccer dad to my daughters for a long time.  When my girls were in high school, I realized that I was more interested in what the kid's mothers looked like than what these young girls in their prime looked like.  I guess that meant I was getting old -- it seems like just yesterday I was chasing after the high school girls, but those days are long past.

Having said all of this, in this community, it seems like the term milf is often used as a euphamism for a mature provider.

I have always associated the term MILF with a woman who has obviously had children. In other words, someone who has kind of broadened at the hips over the years, someone who has spent so much time raising her children that she has not had time to make regular trips to the gym. Slightly overweight, very full figured and soft. In short, the wives of the guys I work with.

The MILFs that have been described above would be the kind of woman with whom I would dream about having "hot sex all night long." The MILF I describe would be a woman with whom I would enjoy cuddling all night long, with the occasional interlude of tender and sensual sex.

and they are so different that I could not find anything to define MILF by looking at them.  Both have children... Both are very sexy, but they are just sooo different that I really cannot tell you what makes each a MILF... but they are.

I've first understood the term in specifics: had children, over 35, very attractive woman, looked exactly like she could easily have been your best friend's mom when you were growing up or the mom from the family next door; someone you always fantasized about being with.  

As time has passed though, i've come to understand it in a more general term:  a lady over the age of 30 who LOOKS like she could be a hot mom regardless of specific age or whether or not she really has kids.  

As MILF is a term of fantasy that we try to apply to reality, I don't think it matters anymore whether she's married or actually has kids.  So long as we view her as a "hot mom" type lady, she can be called a milf.
