Who Does He Think He Is?

Barack Obama wants to speak at the Brandenburg Gate. He figures it would be a nice backdrop. The supporting cast -- a cheering audience and a few fainting frauleins -- would be a picturesque way to bolster his foreign policy credentials.

What Obama does not seem to understand is that the Brandenburg Gate is something you earn. President Reagan earned the right to speak there because his relentless pressure had brought the Soviet empire to its knees and he was demanding its final "tear down this wall" liquidation. When President Kennedy visited the Brandenburg Gate on the day of his "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech, he was representing a country that was prepared to go to the brink of nuclear war to defend West Berlin.

Who is Obama representing? And what exactly has he done in his lifetime to merit appropriating the Brandenburg Gate as a campaign prop? What was his role in the fight against communism, the liberation of Eastern Europe, the creation of what George Bush 41 -- who presided over the fall of the Berlin Wall but modestly declined to go there for a victory lap -- called "a Europe whole and free"?

Does Obama not see the incongruity? It's as if a German pol took a campaign trip to America and demanded the Statue of Liberty as a venue for a campaign speech. (The Germans have now gently nudged Obama into looking at other venues.)

Americans are beginning to notice Obama's elevated opinion of himself. There's nothing new about narcissism in politics. Every senator looks in the mirror and sees a president. Nonetheless, has there ever been a presidential nominee with a wider gap between his estimation of himself and the sum total of his lifetime achievements?

Obama is a three-year senator without a single important legislative achievement to his name, a former Illinois state senator who voted "present" nearly 130 times. As president of the Harvard Law Review, as law professor and as legislator, has he ever produced a single notable piece of scholarship? Written a single memorable article? His most memorable work is a biography of his favorite subject: himself.

It is a subject upon which he can dilate effortlessly. In his victory speech upon winning the nomination, Obama declared it a great turning point in history -- "generations from now we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment" -- when, among other wonders, "the rise of the oceans began to slow." As economist Irwin Stelzer noted in his London Daily Telegraph column, "Moses made the waters recede, but he had help." Obama apparently works alone.

After all, in the words of his own slogan, "we are the ones we've been waiting for," which, translating the royal "we," means: "I am the one we've been waiting for." Amazingly, he had a quasi-presidential seal with its own Latin inscription affixed to his podium, until general ridicule -- it was pointed out that he was not yet president -- induced him to take it down

He lectures us that instead of worrying about immigrants learning English, "you need to make sure your child can speak Spanish" -- a language Obama does not speak. He further admonishes us on how "embarrassing" it is that Europeans are multilingual but "we go over to Europe, and all we can say is, 'merci beaucoup.'" Obama speaks no French.

We are getting to know. Redeemer of our uninvolved, uninformed lives. Lord of the seas. And more. As he said on victory night, his rise marks the moment when "our planet began to heal." As I recall -- I'm no expert on this -- Jesus practiced his healing just on the sick. Obama operates on a larger canvas.

AMEN

why would Obamma not think highly of himself?  Your surprise is what surprises me... afterall, he has been informed that he is "it"!  by the media, by those around him.... and by most important - the vote so far.

We need to hope that someone in his camp, can speak to him about the arrogance. - it will do us all in.

I was going to post this:

Obama’s globe-prancing, as if he is already the elected President of the United States, has instigated a dispute within a foreign country.

The distinction between elected state leaders and a partisan candidate (one who has yet to be formally nominated!) has not escaped German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who was upset by the request by Barack Obama to give a speech at the Brandenburg Gate, calling such a rally “inappropriate.” She does not believe that Germany should give any impression that it is involved in American political races.

The Obama team is apparently surprised at the controversy, which in itself reveals a lack of understanding of the world community and international protocol. One cannot bluster into a sovereign foreign country without regard for its tradition and political situation.

To Germans, the site holds significant meaning. The Brandenburg Gate, built in the 18th century, became the symbol of peace and unification after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Speaking before this hallowed place is considered a honor that is reserved for already elected officials. Previous speakers include Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, and John F. Kennedy. (Actually, Kennedy’s famous ‘Ich bin ein Berliner’ speech was delivered at a town hall in the city, but he did visit the gate.)

According to Chancellor Merkel’s spokesman Thomas Steg. “It is unusual to hold election rallies abroad. No German candidate for high office would even think of using the National Mall (in Washington) or Red Square in Moscow for a rally because it would not be seen as appropriate.”

However, Merkel (of the more conservative Christian Democrats) does not have the last word in the matter, and the rival left-leaning government of the city-state has granted permission for Obama’s speech at the site. (UK Telegraph) One likely motivation would be to upset the Chancellor.

No matter how this matter ultimately resolves itself, Obama and his campaign started a squabble within the factions of a foreign ally. As Bill Galston, a one-time presidential adviser, told British newspaper The Telegraph, “It [the Obama campaign] shows a certain inexperience about complex foreign issues, which is, of course, the opposite of the impression they are trying to create,” he said, reports the UPI.

OK, this incident may not do signfificant or long-lasting damage between our two nations. But avoiding the matter in the first place seems like a no-brainer to anyone who knows just a little about Germany and the history and signficance of the Berlin Wall and the Brandenburg Gate. What could happen when the stakes are much higher?

Obama needs to end his speach ...
ich bin ein BEGINNER.

Thank You 2008=27

Obama's candidacy is built 100% on image and nothing else.  At least JFK was an honest-to-goodness war hero.  Obama wants to stand next to the images where great men said and did great things.  The media of course will somehow link those achievements to him.

have an elevated view of themselves. The article you shared is an excellent analysis of the most troubling basic essence of Senator Obama namely, that he is all talk and no action.

"Money talks and bullshit talks" as they say in Texas but with Obama when someone calls out for him to prove his boasts; he jesters that his opponents are playing politics as usual, that we must go on beyond debates on character, and yet he will belittle another man's accomplishments. When Obama and his surrogates state Senator McCain was merely a rider in a plane and that being a Prisoner of War is not a qualification for office of the President is an attempt to beguile Obama's deficiencies in manhood, patriotism and his thin resume.

I am still waiting to hear Senator Obama's accomplishments. As President Clinton said, Obama's candidancy is the greatest "fairy tale" in American politics.

I won't attempt to speak on this thread about Obama and how he views himself when it comes to his politics. But in light of his home/family life, I do believe he is humble. He often jokes about how Michelle has to pick up after him and that he has a bad habit of leaving his socks around the house. Thus despite discussion on his political behavior, he does not appear to be superficial when he discusses his role as a husband and father as I have seen and heard this same message from him on several media outlets both on television and in print.

Too bad he wasn't running for the title role in  a new sitcom, "My Husband the Schlub." In the pilot, he forgets to put his socks away and his neighbor Tony puts cash in one, and his neighbor Bill loads the other with C4. When Barack goes behind the garage to sneak a smoke, Michelle finds the socks and hilarity ensues!

or role as a father and family man. Judging those human qualities are completely subjective and thus inexplicably difficult to discuss without emotional bias.

I do however trust a man's actions over his words and in that regard I encourage you to peruse an article about the McCain's family decision to adopt a baby girl from Mother Teresa's orphange. Long before Madonna, Angelina Jolie made it cool or fashionable to adopt foreign babies, the McCain's were offering their home for those less fortunate then themselves.

The article though sometimes paint an unflattering picture of Sen. McCain the father, and to me that is OK. It's OK because often the hallmark of a leader is one who is flawed. We all have insecurities and those who have been able to turn their failures into accomplishments have been mankind's greatest leaders.

Obama has the character of milktoast. He has no  failures and no accomplishments that elevate Sen. Obama the man, as a man of distinction. I am sorry, but I do not see any actions in Sen. Obama's life or in his career that speak of a code of conduct such as duty, honor and country. Leaving socks on the floor is not a great failure nor a great accomplishment.

Thank you for your post.

Respectfully,

Breaker

Yes, I do know about the Mccain family adopting a baby girl from Bangladesh. This of course stood out to me as well having my heritage come from South Asia. I think adoption is a great thing and speaks volumes about the  nature of a person and the fact that they want to give all the love and wonderful opportunities they can to a young child whose family or even own country is not able to support. Thus, I really thank you for pointing us in the direction of this fact about Mccain, I wish that more people would adopt the children of this world who all need love and care and families to nurture them and help them succeed in life.--Sitara Devi

merciful kindness. I am confident that when you select our President this November your choice will be based upon careful observation, reflection and fair-mindedness.

Most respectfully,
