So, I'm a hobbist from years back but I've been away. Tried to do a booking late-morning. Sent some texts for some providers I'd narrowed from a site and got a couple responses. So far so good. I started setting up with one and she asked for payment of half up front. Now, I've been gone for years and I should have done research before getting back out there but I thought maybe the game had changed. I was always a cash guy. Options given were zelle, cashapp, apple pay.  They'd already guided me to a hotel lobby but I balked at sending money before meeting her.  So we agreed to cancel.

I picked up with another and as we were setting up, I got the same thing: pre-pay half, same options. I should note here that both providers were marked as "verified" on the site (not TER). Because this provider was asking the same thing, I went against misgivings and sent the money via apple pay. Got a text notification about a minute later saying the amount had been refunded. Meanwhile the provider is saying she saw the payment (and had asked for a screenshot) and then said she saw it get reversed, asked if I reversed it.

I'm embarrassed to say, I didn't at this moment realize I was being scammed. I sent money again, this time through cashapp. Lo and behold, another reversal message, FROM THE SAME NUMBER.  And too late I realized I was being scammed, had been successfully scammed actually.  

Lesson learned.  The scammer then tried to get more out of me but I just told them I realized what was up. They're scum but I'm the idiot who sent money into the void not once but twice.

Anyway, I tell that story because I am now doing what I should have done beforehand, **ASKING QUESTIONS**:  
What's the deal now? Can I assume the moment cash isn't an option that I can write the exchange off as a scam (aside from the obvious tell of demanding money up-front sight unseen)?

Sorry man, but this happens to all of us at one time or another if you hobby long enough. I remember back in Tampa in the 90's I hired two beautiful women to come to my room and party. They got there and were experts at keeping me talking. Asking me about Atlanta, asking me about my job, what I was doing in Tampa, if we knew any of the same people, etc.  

Long story short, their time alarm went off and they "had to leave right away!" I even offered to pay them more to stay, but no go. Then I realized it was all a scam and I had just parted with $500.  

I guess it's the price you pay, but I will tell you this, I was NEVER SCAMMED AGAIN, the lesson was one I never forgot. And I have a feeling you never will be, either.

PS--Will TER allow you to list who the providers were here or on the Rip-off board?

I was able to post on both the Atlanta and Carolina boards (it happened in Myrtle Beach)  

It really ticks me off with these scenarios. When you guys get scammed in this manner it makes it harder for the ladies who are honest and professional that do ask for deposits. Deposits came around covid because so many people were last minute canceling and it cut out a lot of the time wasting. Best advice I can possibly think of if you come across a lady asking for a deposit maybe check to see if she is reviewed or has a steady presence on multiple platforms. Check Twitter to see her social media presence and how she represents herself again just suggestions but there are plenty of reputable providers that don't ask for deposits or as suggested you can never go wrong with Sunny at SPP!

I've never heard of this scamming tactic, and now I'm the wiser. I think most of us have TOFTT at one time or another.   Years ago [pre-covid] I was scammed out of $500 by a very convincing group of perpetrators. I even met and had a face-to-face conversation with the main actor. The lesson I learned was to never give the money to someone acting as an intermediary. The best way to get back at scammers is to expose their tactics, as you have done. On general principles, I would not send her half the fee for a deposit.

Visiting Myrtle Beach I had pre scheduled with a long time advertised well reviewed Carolina provider  
We texted/ emailed/ spoke numerous times in the week prior to our appointment  
The night before , over the phone she asked for the deposit. Not a surprise as it’s clearly marked on her ads  

Day of?  No show. And shes ghosted me since

I'm a veteran in the business from way back and I can tell you it's changed A LOT in 20 years .
It used to be easy and trust worthy (for the most part). Now everyone has an agenda , other than to get laid off course lol
