Take a stroll up and down Michigan Ave, and behold the marvels, especially the Tribune Building right by the Chicago River and farther north the old Waterworks Building.  Across from the Millennium Park, itself worth a good tour, is the Cultural Center on Michigan between Washington and Randolph.  It was once the City Library and the interior is incredible.

A bit farther south on Michigan is the Art Institute of Chicago, and you could spend days there.  They have, for example, the original American Gothic by Grant Wood, among other treasures.  My favorite though is in the Basement of the Main Building, the Thorn Rooms.  About 50 or so dioramas of miniature rooms created from real rooms in buildings that were eventually taken down.  The exquisite period furnishings and styles that would have disappeared if not for the effort by this person to recreate them.  They really are something to behold in terms of the level of detail used.

There's also a Museum of Science a few miles south of that which I loved.  I think that one also has the only German U Boat ever captured and put on display.  It's a very interesting exhibit.  You can go right through the submarine and get a feel for what it must have been like to be a crew member of something like that.

I hope you have the time to really enjoy that city.  It is one of my favorites

Address is 1400 South Lake Shore Drive and it's reachable by a train/bus combination so you don't need a car.  Nearby are the Adler Planetarium and Shedd Aquarium if those are of interest, but they're separate admission fees.

Never been there, but friends have talked it up so much that it's now a must see for my next trip to Chicago with a free day.  But I've been warned against going June 21-23 when it offers free admission for Illinois residents, and likely will be packed!

If you have time to visit multiple places, consider a City Pass as it would be cheaper than buying individual tickets.  It's good for 9 days in a row so you don't have to wear yourself out sightseeing in one day.

I've gone a few times now. Can't be beat if that's your thing. If not try it anyway.
