I handle my bussiness Via Internet only. I agree with your statement. I am a southern bella kind of girl and in my pass experience I have not experience seening the street walker on the streets nor do I see it where I live. I only knows what goes on in the movies.

I was using the Escort listing of Yellow Pages in SF and Beverly Hills in the early 90s to meet escorts.

I used the height, measurement and weight to screen escorts.  I often request slender (105 - 115 lb), light skin, B - C cup, 5'4" to 5'8", 21 - 27 year old escorts.  Often the escort that showed up is more tan, 8 - 10 lb heavier, 2" shorter and 3 to 5 years older which will still be OK with me given my initial request.  However, from time to time, someone average looking or much older showed up and I have to give them $20 to send them away.

With agency outcall at that time, there was a lot of delay between the initial call and the time when the escort showed up (9pm call, 11pm at the door).  It is hard to send someone away after 11:30pm since there was often not enough time to find a replacement.

Since I used 4 star hotels for outcall, there is not a lot of screening done by agencies.  From time to time a new agency will send a second rated lady to meet me and if I rejected her, a better looking girl will show up.  Often the next time I called, they will say the pretty escort I met before was out of town and send someone less good looking as a substitute.

Actually, in 1990, I met Heidi Fleiss while she was working in an agency.  She was there in my hotel room in Century City as a substitue of a beautiful Swedish blonde I saw the day before.  The rate was $500/hr for 2 hr.  (just a little anecdote )

I can't speak for every city, but in the pre-internet days, most independent lady's in New York would advertise their services in Newspapers like the current versions of Screw, NY Sceen, etc. All of the publications by Joe Rose. Cities like NY were more liberal and hand other real quality of life problems than to mess with the high end lady's much. These lady's did not then as now need the services of a pimp. Pimps are more associated with your street level business. Agencies were no more reputable then than they are now. NY has always had its brothels. Back then the clients were more local neighborhood guys while now, because of the net, their clients may be world wide. I would say this environment was the norm in most liberal cities like San Fran, LA, Chicago etc. In conservative cities like those in the south, there was probably less of an appeal for an upscale lady to set up shop. There was probably more of a street level thing going on or the neighborhood hooker hangout where guys were sure to get luck for that was the only reason why a woman would be hanging out in such a place. In cities like this brothels were almost like institutions. Everyone new about them and they were part of the community. Not that I'm a historian on the subject or am that old to have seen these things first hand, but I see and hear things throughout my travels LOL.
