Hey guys and gals, just wondering:  is it possible to visit in the winter, at all?  Do I just need to rent a great snow-capable vehicle while I'm in town and pack my warmest clothes and hide in my hotel room for two days?  Or is it really not much of a doable thing?  I wonder about delayed flights, closed roads, nonrefundable hotel bookings, etc.  Obviously advance bookings aren't much of a thing so I wouldn't have to worry about missing appointments due to a late flight, but I wonder how impossible it is to coordinate travel logistics in the winter.

I miss ND and don't have any time to visit before the end of 2014!  I can wait until Spring but I was just wondering if winter is possible, you know?

Your feedback is appreciated - thanks!

I've lived in Minnesota pretty much my entire life and I am USED to winter driving and I still don't have the guts to PLAN a visit even to Fargo during the months of Dec through March.     I've driven in Plenty of blizzard type conditions when I've had No Choice and it's not fun....at least for me.
I have this thing about wanting/needing to be able to SEE the road that I'm driving on........call me silly.

:)

It has to be pretty bad weather for flight cancellations I would think.....so flying into Fargo should be safe.  DRIVING around the rest of the state,    prepare for the "worst" and you'll at least be...... prepared.   :

I lived there once and the snow went over our house. It was cool we shoveled a tunnel to the driveway.
I was thinking to visit this month. How's the weather now?

I guess I really just miss Fargo so I might just try flying there!  Maybe I'll look for a hotel with a generous cancellation policy in case I get stuck somewhere.  :)

Hi Zoey,

One of the misconceptions about winters in the Dakotas is the amount of snow.  The climate there is "semi-arid" meaning it is quite dry.  Most of the snow that ND gets is from blizzards and they do not occur often.  What is most important is the cold and wind.  It is very hazardous to be out when it is below zero.  If your car stalls out any distance from safe refuge you could be in danger for your life.  If you are going there Jan. to March be prepared with a survival kit - arctic coveralls, aux heat source (candles), spare phone battery etc.

When I lived there we stayed in doors most of the winter and when we did travel it was shorter distances and never far from civilization.  Unless you have clientele in or near the hotel you are staying business will most-likely be slow.

There was a saying when we lived there, "Thirty degrees below zero and thirty mph winds keeps the riff-raff away". LOL

that sounds like something out of a movie kind of scary I'm in Denver have in my ass handed to him because killing business for me out here in Denver New Jersey was out with a couple weeks ago I just think the shears winter is been really rough.

okay will I talk text I talk into my computer and it types out the words and after reading this I was concerned and will be more careful and my posting.
well the winter does sound like it is too rough to be in that neck of the woods this is summer hot Orza summer still snowing
I guess I picture like Alaska.  anyway there's a lot of money there so I thought Fiann but after reading all this about the snow and after being in Denver and a snow storm in New Jersey and a snow storm I think my butt will go to Florida for a few weeks maybe Sarasota and Orlando

But watch the weather forcast and if they say "travel notr advised" that means "DON'T GO ANYWHERE".  Stay put wherever you happen to be.  North Dakpota will not even put snow plows on the road during a blizzard.

Bismarck in December, to be specific.  I had no flight cancellations or other travel issues.  I say check the weather forecast & go for it ;-)
